Lipoma

A lipoma is a common benign tumor made up of fat tissue. These soft, rubbery lumps often develop just beneath the skin, although they can also occur deeper within the body. While lipomas are typically harmless and rarely cause pain, they can sometimes grow large enough to cause discomfort or affect one’s appearance.
The exact cause of lipomas is not always clear, but they are believed to result from an overgrowth of fat cells. They can occur at any age but are most commonly found in middle-aged adults. Some individuals may have a genetic predisposition to developing lipomas, and they can sometimes run in families.
Lipomas typically feel soft and doughy to the touch and can be moved around under the skin with slight pressure. They often grow slowly over time and may remain stable in size or even shrink on their own. In some cases, however, they may continue to grow and become bothersome.
Treatment for lipomas is usually not necessary unless they cause symptoms such as pain or discomfort, or if they affect one’s appearance. In such cases, surgical removal of the lipoma may be recommended. This can typically be done as an outpatient procedure under local anesthesia.
